In 1918 the constituency consisted of the "George Square, St. Giles' and St. Leonard's Municipal Wards of Edinburgh."
As abolished in 2005, the Westminster constituency covered a central portion of the
City of Edinburgh council area , includingEdinburgh Old Town , the West End, Holyrood andMurrayfield . The constituency was one of six covering the city council area.For the 2005 general election, the constituency area was divided between Edinburgh East, Edinburgh North and Leith, Edinburgh South West and Edinburgh West.
