Pampas beasts") is an ancient family, now extinct, of large armadillo-likeplantigrade armored xenarthrans. They are related toGlyptodontidae , an extinct family of much larger and more heavily armored xenarthrans, as well as to extantarmadillo s (Dasypodidae). Pampatheres evolved inSouth America during its long period ofCenozoic isolation. "Holmesina " spread toNorth America after the formation of theIsthmus of Panama as part of theGreat American Interchange . They finally disappeared on both continents in the end-Pleistocene extinctions.References
