Bud Scott (
January 11 ,1890 -July 2 ,1949 ) was an Americanjazz banjoist. He was one of the earliest musicians associated with theNew Orleans jazz scene.Scott played guitar and violin as a child and performed professionally from an early age. Late in his life, he claimed he had played with the legendary
Buddy Bolden when young. He played withJohn Robichaux , possibly as early as 1904; following this he played withFreddie Keppard 's Olympia Orchestra, and joined theBilly King Traveling Show as a violinist in 1913. He moved toNew York City in 1915 and found work in theatre orchestras; he also sang at this time, and found work playing banjo withBob Young inBaltimore in 1917. In 1921 he played inWill Marion Cook 's Orchestra, and moved toChicago around this time. There he played withKing Oliver 's Creole Jazz Band in 1923 and withKid Ory ; he played with both on and off again in the 1920s. He also did a stint withCurtis Mosby 's Blue Blowers inLos Angeles in the mid-1920s. Late in the decade he worked underErskine Tate ,Johnny Dodds ,Dave Peyton ,Jimmie Noone (1928),Jelly Roll Morton , andFess Williams .Late in 1929 he moved to
Los Angeles , and played there withLeon Herriford ,Mutt Carey , and with his own trio ensemble. He played withKid Ory once more from 1944 to 1948, but fell ill and had to retire from music. He died the following year.References
