The World Cup for Champion Clubs, commonly referred to as the Intercontinental Cup, was a basketball competition endorsed by FIBA to gather the best clubs from the federations affiliated to FIBA (excluding the professional NBA teams) and to officialy decade the best club of the world, contended only by the continets of higher basketball level Europe and America. In 1973 the competition adopted the name Intercontinental cup William Jones to honor the secretary general of FIBA. Intercontinental Cup competition organized between 1966 and 1987. In 1996 FIBA tryed to reborn the competition organizing again the Intercontinental Cup in a best-of-three playoff tournament between the winners of the FIBA European Championship and the winners of the Liga Sudamericana but after this tournament the competition succeeded by McDonald's Championship.
