Heworth Grange Comprehensive School is a comprehensive high school in the Gateshead area of Tyne and Wear, England. It educates over 1,500 students, aged 11-18, including a sixth form. The school has specialist status as an Arts College, attained in 2005. [ [http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-127851469.html "North gets 10 more specialist schools in bid to raise standards"] , The Journal, January 28, 2005] The Headteacher is Brian Huddart.

Development

This school was the first in the North East to be awarded funds under the Building Schools for the Future scheme, in February 2004. [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/nolpda/ukfs_news/hi/newsid_3484000/3484053.stm "Cash for 'schools of the future'"] , BBC News, 12 February 2004]

There were proposals to merge this school with Thomas Hepburn Secondary School in Felling. [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/tyne/7012923.stm "Swipe-cards to aid pupil safety"] , BBC News, 25 September 2007] however such plans were curbed in the early stages.

IT facilities

Heworth Grange has a modern computer suite, called the "Heworth Grange City Learning Centre" (CLC). Notably, this is used by three other secondary schools and is used by all the primary schools in the area. [ [http://www.hgclc.org/index.htm Haworth Grange City Learning Centre] , "accessed 21 March 2008"]

Popularity

Most schools in the North East have falling roles. By contrast, this school has such a high reputation that it is consistently over-subscribed year on year. [ [http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1G1-139158079.html "Excellent reputation built up over years"] , Graeme Whitfield, The Journal, November 28, 2005]

chool fatality

School fatalities in the United Kingdom are extremely rare. In December 1998, 16-year-old Darren Carruthers died of brain damage following a playground fight. A 15-year-old was eventually acquitted of his manslaughter at Newcastle Crown Court.
