The AGS JH22 was a racing car entered byAutomobiles Gonfaronnaises Sportives for the 1987 FIA Formula One season. Background
It replaced the
Motori Moderni -powered JH21, which was moulded around an old Renault chassis. [cite web|url=http://www.grandprix.com/gpe/con-ags.html|publisher=GrandPrix.com|title=CONSTRUCTORS: AGS (AUTOMOBILES GONFARONNAISE SPORTIVES)|accessdate=2008-04-10] The team chose to enter just one car throughout the season, powered by the normally-aspirated Ford-Cosworth DFZ V8 engine. AGS built only two chassis, labeled #32 and #33, which were used throughout the season. The JH22 was noted as "a development of the 1986 car",cite book|last=Hamilton|first=Maurice|origyear=1987|title=AUTOCOURSE 1987-88|publisher=Hazleton Publishing|page=pp. 58] although the chassis numbering sequence is different than the previous year's JH21 car.The car used the number 14 throughout the season, and was painted white with red stripes and a large rose on the nosecone. The team tried different configurations for the engine
airbox (when one was used at all); sometimes it was positioned near the roll-over bar, in others, it was just above the engine, aft of the fuel tank. In deference to the sponsor El Charro (a Mexican shoe and clothing company), [cite web|url=http://www.funtrivia.com/en/Sports/F1-Teams-Sponsors-5555.html|publisher=Fun Trivia|title=F1 Teams & Sponsors|accessdate=2008-04-10] the race entries throughout the year were listed as El Charro AGS.Results
For the first 14 race meetings, the driver was F1 newcomer
Pascal Fabre , whom had driven for AGS'Formula 3000 team the previous year. The Frenchman qualified last on the grid in 9 of his 11 race starts, [cite web|url=http://www.chicanef1.com/query.pl?action=Submit&exact=on&carmodel=AGS%20JH22&entrant=Team%20El%20Charro%20AGS|publisher=Chicane F1|title=AGS JH22|accessdate=2008-04-10] and usually finished last as well. After failing to qualify for the Mexican Grand Prix (his third failure to qualify of the season), he was replaced byRoberto Moreno for the Japanese Grand Prix at Suzuka. [cite web|url=http://f1rejects.com/drivers/fabre/biography.html|publisher=F1 Rejects|title=Pascal Fabre Biography|accessdate=2008-04-10] his first appearance at F1 race meeting in over five years. [cite web|url=http://www.forix.com/8w/moreno2.html|publisher=8W|title=A Lotus break that came too early|accessdate=2008-04-10]Moreno scratched onto the back of the grid at Suzuka, but at the season-ending race at Adelaide, he finished in 7th place. After the race, Ayrton Senna's Lotus was disqualified for oversized brake ducts, cite book|last=Hamilton|first=Maurice|origyear=1987|title=
AUTOCOURSE 1987-88|publisher=Hazleton Publishing|page=pp. 223] so both Moreno and AGS found themselves with their first championship point, having been moved up to sixth place.cite book|last=Hamilton|first=Maurice|origyear=1987|title=AUTOCOURSE 1987-88|publisher=Hazleton Publishing|page=pp. 222–23] The team finished the season tied for 11th in the Constructor's Championship, and that single championship point would help AGS escape the Friday morning pre-qualifying sessions for 1988.After Formula One
Both JH22 cars were not used in Formula One racing after 1987; one remains in AGS' historic collection, and the other is on display at the [http://www.manoir-automobile.fr Lohéac Automobile Museum] .
