* 1872 – The Delaware and Raritan Canal, New Jersey Railroad and the Camden and Amboy Railroad, the first railroad built in New Jersey, are merged into the United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company.
* 1874 – Construction begins on the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad in Colorado.

20th century

* 1907 – Northwestern Elevated Railroad, the predecessor of the modern Chicago 'L' Brown Line, opens for service between the Loop and Lincoln Square.
* 1937 – All heavyweight wood passenger cars used on the "Super Chief" are replaced with lightweight stainless steel cars.

21st century

* 2005 – BNSF Railway takes delivery of its first diesel locomotives with built-in video cameras and microphones to record grade crossing incidents; BNSF intends to mount cameras in all lead-qualified locomotives by December 2005.
* 2005 – JR West adviser Masataka Ide announces that he will resign at the company's annual shareholder meeting in June 2005 to take responsibility for the Amagasaki rail crash; the chairman and president will also resign later in August.
* 2005 – Fire causes an estimated $30,000 in damages to a bridge on Union Pacific Railroad's Nogales Subdivision south of Tucson, Arizona. Investigators believe the cause to be arson.
