California , especially the Sierra Nevada and its foothills. Its range may extend intoNevada . This is a perennial herb starting from patches of oblong leaves each up to 12 centimeters long. Erect stems rise to heights between 40 and 70 centimeters, with gradually fewer leaves toward the tops. The stems hold cymeinflorescence s of deep blue to violet flowers. Each petite flower has five rounded lobes with a petallike appendage at the base of each. The fruit is a prickly nutlet about half a centimeter long.External links
