Edward Prime Stevenson was born on June 23, 1858 in Madison, New Jersey. His father was a Presbyterian minister and a school principal; his mother was the offspring of a family of men of letters.
After studying law, he decided to become a writer and a journalist. He moved to Italy, where the law was more lenient on homosexuality.
He is perhaps best known for his 1906 gay novel "", and, to a certain extent, for his 1908 study, "The Intersexes".
