The California Basic Educational Skills Test, also known as CBEST (abbreviated) is a standardized test all California teachers must pass in order to teach at public schools and gain a credential.

The test is divided into three parts, two multiple choice sections of 50 questions each in Mathematics and Reading and one essay portion. The essay portion contains to writing prompts which both need to be completed. One prompt requires a opinion bases response and the other is a personal based. Timing is for the entire exam, so examinees may take as much time in any testing area as needed, and complete the sections in the order that they wish. The total exam time is four hours.
