The main character, Tara, tells her brother to give her a shell, but wrenches it off him. She looks at it and it is beautiful. She thinks about what would happen in school. She then walks along the beach. She then puts the shell up to her ear and hears a terrified voice. She drops it and expects her brother to laugh at her.
But she's alone, and realises the shell is talking to "her". She starts to go to a cave and scary things happen along the way, such as falling into fish bones.
When she "does" reach the cave, she gasps at what her shell calls "the biggest shell in the world". But the shell says that it forgot something. This is where Tara gets scared.
The big shell then turns over, and out comes — a monstrous
hermit crab ! Tara tries to run away but is too slow. The crab lifts her into the air as another hermit crab screeches "I've found another one!" She screams as the claws snap shut around her.
