Association of Armed Struggle

Association of Armed Struggle

Związek Walki Zbrojnej (ZWZ; "Association of Armed Struggle" or more commonly, "Union for Armed Struggle") was the name of the underground army formed in Poland after the country was occupied by Germany and the Soviet Union as a result of the Invasion of Poland in 1939.

The organization was created on November 13, 1939, out of an earlier organization "Służba Zwycięstwu Polski".

In January of 1940, the "ZWZ" was divided into two parts:
*areas under German occupation - commanded by Colonel Stefan Rowecki, with headquarters in Warsaw,
*areas under Soviet occupation - commanded by General Michal Tokarzewski-Karaszewicz, with headquarters in Lwow. On February 14, 1942 the ZWZ was renamed as the Armia Krajowa (literally "The Country Army", but more commonly referred to in English as the "Home Army").
