Peace Boat

The nihongo|Peace Boat|ピースボート|Pīsu Bōto is an international Non-governmental organization based in Shinjuku, Tokyo, seeking to establish a global network among people, grassroots movements and NGOs working on issues such as peace, human rights development and environmental protection. In the past 15 years it has chartered passenger ships to make 25 voyages and taken over 10,000 people to more than 80 ports. [ cite web

History

Peace Boat’s first voyage was organized in 1983 by a group of Japanese university students, led by Kiyomi Tsujimoto, as a creative response to Japanese history textbook controversies, which they saw as government censorship regarding Japan’s military aggression in the Asia-Pacific. They chartered a ship to visit neighboring countries with the aim of learning first-hand about the war from those who experienced it and initiating people-to-people exchange. [ cite web
