The Shanghai Center (zh-cp|c=上海中心|p=Shànghǎi zhōngxīn) is a supertall skyscraper approved for construction in the Pudong District of Shanghai. The building, which upon completion will rise to 632 metres, have 127 stories, and contain an area of 380,000 sq meters, [cite web |title=超高楼"上海中心"尚未展开正式设计招标 |url=http://sh.xinmin.cn/minsheng/2007/10/26/944606.html |publisher=Xinmin |language=Chinese |date=2007-10-26 |accessdate=2008-05-17] cite web |title=上海中心大厦项目环境影响报告书简本公示 |url=http://www.envir.gov.cn/info/2008/200808131.pdf |publisher=Envir.gov.cn |language=Chinese |format=pdf |date=2008-08-13 |accessdate=2008-08-14] will be the tallest building in China, cite web |title=Tallest Chinese building features indoor gardens |url=http://www.shanghaidaily.com/sp/article/2008/200807/20080724/article_367915.htm |publisher=Shanghai Daily |date=2008-07-24 |accessdate=2008-08-09] and one of the tallest in the world. [Surpassed only by the Burj Dubai, unless taller skyscrapers are built before it.]

Design

Planning models for the Lujiazui financial district dating back to 1993 show plans for three supertall skyscrapers all next to each other. [cite web |title=上海浦东拟建世界第一高楼 外形酷似方尖碑 |url=http://sc.people.com.cn/news/HTML/2007/10/26/20071026091240.htm |publisher=People.com.cn |language=Chinese |date=2007-10-26 |accessdate=2008-05-17] Two have already been built; the Jin Mao Building was completed in 1998, and the Shanghai World Financial Center in 2008.

After numerous designs were submitted by many architectural firms, two design proposals reached the final in early 2008, both 580 m tall. A design termed "Dragon" by Gensler was chosen in June 2008, [cite web |title=City skyscraper to look like coiled dragon |url=http://www.shanghaidaily.com/sp/article/2008/200806/20080624/article_364364.htm |publisher=Shanghai Daily |date=2008-06-24 |accessdate=2008-06-28] where the building twists as it rises and is surrounded by an outer glass curtain wall.

The tower will feature nine indoor gardens at different levels, situated between the main building and the glass façade, with a height of more 10 metres each. A public park will also be contained within the building.

Construction status

As of August 2008, the site has been prepared for construction, and building is to start later this year. Construction of the tower will use sustainable techniques to make the building environmentally friendly and reduce energy usage.

The current block assigned for the Shanghai Center, Z3-2, was for a short time a golf course, before the site was cleared for preparation.cite web |title="上海中心"规划方案曝光 将成上海最高观光平台 |url=http://sh.news.sina.com.cn/20080424/094790484.shtml |publisher=Sina.com |language=Chinese |date=2008-04-24 |accessdate=2008-05-17]

The building was originally meant to be completed by 2010, in time for the 2010 World Expo, but is now expected to be finished in 2013. [" [http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cityguide/2008-08/29/content_6982069.htm New Skyscraper ready for its dizzying debut] ". Shanghai Daily 2008.29.08. ]
