Halshany ( _lt. Alšėnai, ( _pl. Holszany) is a village and former town in
Belarus ,Hrodna Voblast .History
According to a legend the town was founded by the founder of the
Olshanski (Olszańscy, Alšėniškiai) family ofLithuanian nobility . It was the place of birth of the Lithuanian princess and later the Grand Duchess of Lithuania andqueen of Poland Sophia of Halshany , extendingLithuania nJagellon dynasty over two states.During the times of the
Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth the town was in the hands of theSapieha family, which constructed acastle there in early 17th century. The town had grew smaller, with the devastations of the mid-17th century wars wrought in the Commonwealth. The town became part of theRussian Empire with the partitions of Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 18th century. After theFirst World War the town became a part of theSecond Polish Republic ; it was taken by the Soviet Union after theSoviet invasion of Poland and became part of theBelorussian SSR . After thefall of communism it became part of the modern Belarus.
