10 March 1904 –27 May 1941 ) was the 1stArtillery Officer on board theGerman battleship Bismarck and was awarded theKnight's Cross of the Iron Cross for sinking HMS Hood on24 May 1941 in theBattle of the Denmark Strait .On the morning of 27 May 1941 "Group West" received a transmission from "Bismarck" at 02:21 recommending Schneider for the Knight's Cross. At 03:51 a reply confirmed thatHitler had awarded him the "Ritterkreuz" [Jackson 2002, p. 91.] .Adolf Eich had witnessed AdmiralGünther Lütjens and CaptainErnst Lindemann shaking his hand after receiving the award [Ballard 1990, p. 120-121] .Schneider was killed only 5 hours and 11 minutes later during, and just 15 minutes into, Bismarck's final battle, when a 8 inch shell from "Norfolk" hit his position in the main gun director [Jackson 2002, p. 91.] .Awards
