- Sunda Plate
The Sunda Plate is a
tectonic plate located in southeastAsia and commonly considered a part of theEurasian Plate . The Sunda includes theSouth China Sea , theAndaman Sea , southern parts ofVietnam andThailand along withMalaysia and the islands ofBorneo ,Sumatra , Java, and part of theCelebes inIndonesia . Also included is the seismically active westernPhilippine Islands .The Sunda is bounded by (clockwise from the east) the
Philippine Plate , theBird's Head microplate (westernNew Guinea ); theMolucca Sea ,Banda Sea andTimor microplates; theAustralian Plate ;theBurma Plate ; theEurasian Plate ; and theYangtze Plate to the north.The eastern, southern, and western boundaries of the Sunda Plate are tectonically complex and seismically active. Only the northern boundary is relatively quiescent.
