Yankowsky was first elected to the Alberta Legislature in the 1993 Alberta general election. He defeated incumbent New Democrat MLA

He was re-elected to his second term in office in the 1997 Alberta general election. The election in 1997 was hotly contested as he won the new electoral district of Edmonton Beverly-Clareview.
