George is a popular masculine given name. It is an adaptation of the Greek name "Georgios" (Γεώργιος), which is derived from the Greek word polytonic|γεωργός ("georgos", "farmer" or "earth-worker"). The word polytonic|γεωργός is a compound word, formed by the words polytonic|γῆ ("ge", "earth", "soil") and polytonic|ἔργον ("ergon", "task", "undertaking", "work"). [G.
