Jean-Pascal van Ypersele (b.
Brussels ,1957 ) is a Belgian Professor of Climatology and Environmental Sciences at theUniversité Catholique de Louvain -La-Neuve (UCL). He is an expert in modeling climate and the climate effects of human activities, and does research on the impacts ofclimate change .Education
He obtained a PhD in
physics at the Université Catholique de Louvain-la-Neuve (1986 with highest honours) and made his doctoral research inclimatology at theNational Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), (Colorado ,USA ) on the effect ofglobal warming onAntarctic seaice .Career
Jean-Pascal van Ypersele is Vice-Chair of the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and participates as scientific adviser to theUnited Nations conferences on climate issues. He teaches climatology and environmental sciences, and directs the Master programme in Science and Management of the Environment at the UCL. Since 1993, he is a member of the "Belgian Federal Council for Sustainable Development", and he chairs its Working Group on "Energy and Climate".Awards
