Arthur Eugene Simmons (b. February 5, 1926,
Glen White, West Virginia ) is an Americanjazz pianist.Simmons played in a band while serving in the U.S. military in 1946. He remained in
Germany after the war, studying music, and moved toParis in 1949. There he studied at theParis Conservatory and theEcole Normale de Musique , playing withCharlie Parker andKenny Clarke at theParis Jazz Festival ; he also played withAaron Bridgers ,Don Byas ,Robert Mavounzy , andNelson Williams . He led his own group at the Ringside Club in 1951. In the early 1950s he played withDizzy Gillespie andQuincy Jones , and touredLondon with singers such asBertice Reading . As resident pianist at the Mars Club, he worked withMichel Gaudry ,Pierre Cullaz , andElek Bacsik , and accompanied touring singers such asCarmen McRae andBillie Holiday (1958). In the early 1960s he played in a duo withArt Taylor .Simmons also did arranging work for
Barclay Records . In 1971 he played inSpain ; following this he returned to the United States and retired.References
