KEOL (91.7 FM) is the radio station at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon. KEOL currently operates at one hundred watts at 91.7 MHz.

History

KEOL-FM was originally KEOC-FM when it first went on the air in September, 1973, and operated at a frequency of 91.1 MHz at ten watts, using a Gates tube-fired transmitter.

The original idea of KEOL-FM came about when two employees of then Eastern Oregon State College saw the opportunity to file with the Federal Communications Commission a petition to launch a radio station that would play classical and jazz music; genres not offered by other receivable radio stations in the area at the time. This first interdepartmental typewritten letter was dated February, 1967 and is placed in KEOL's public files. The station originally was in a room deep within Hoke College Center, then moved to the second floor of the Pierce Library in 1976, and from there to a two-storey bungalow located to the north of the Pierce Library complex where the station is housed today.

Operations

The radio station is operated by the students and faculty of Eastern Oregon University, along with volunteers and alma mater acting as community laisons and advisers, and is funded by support mainly from student incidental fees with additional support from fund raisers and underwriting. There is a faculty adviser, station manager (honorarium), program director (honorarium) and music director, and occasional news directors, assistant music directors, and sponsorship coordinators along with work study students who contribute to KEOL's operations.
