Konstiantyn Trutovsky

Konstiantyn Trutovsky

Konstiantyn Trutovsky ( _uk. Констянтин Трутовский, 1826-1893) was a Russian-Ukrainian realist painter and graphic artist. Trutovsky studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1845-1849). In 1860 he became an academician.

His artistic heritage includes numerous genre screns on Ukrainian themes. He was interested in ethnography and depicted colorful Ukrainian folk customs, not shying away from "a dash of good humour". Like Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine's foremost bard, Trutovsky described the miserable and hopeless life of the peasant."Spirit of Ukraine: 500 Years of Painting." Winnipeg Art Gallery. 1991, pg. 202 ISBN 0-88915-163-6.]

Trutovsky took part in publishing Lev Zhemchuzhnikov's album, "Picturesque Ukraine", and illustrated the poems and biography of Shevchenko.
