Cato T. Laurencin

Cato T. Laurencin, MD, PhD (19- ) is currently the Lillian T. Pratt Distinguished Professor, and Chairman of the Department Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia, Orthopaedic Surgeon-in-Chief of the University of Virginia Health System, and University Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Professor of Chemical Engineering in the College of Engineering at University of Virginia.

Clinical:

He is one of only 3 practicing orthopaedic surgeons in the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies.

Dr. Laurencin won the Nicolas Andry Prize (highest award from the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons). It is considered a lifetime achievement award of the profession.

He was named to the IOM Roundtable on Evidenced Based Medicine (his specific designation on the roundtable is representing the interests of all physician providers).

Clinical Firsts:

Dr. Laurencin was the first Orthopaedic Surgeon to achieve University Professor level rank in the Country.

Dr. Laurencin is the first Surgeon in the US to be elected to the Third World Academy of Sciences (of the six US members elected in the last two years, one third are Nobel prize winners).

New:

This year (2008), Dr. Laurencin was elected Chair of the Board of the National Medical Association-Cobb Health Institute, dedicating to addressing health disparities. He was named one of "America's Leading Physicians" by "Black Enterprise Magazine".
