Primarily a hooker, he previously played in Super League for the Wigan, with whom he won the 2002 Challenge Cup.
Smith has been captain of the Widnes side since the retirement of Terry O'Connor in 2006. He has on very rare occasion spent time during his career playing at loose forward.
