Chaires-Capitola Volunteer Fire Department

Chaires-Capitola Volunteer Fire Department

Established in Leon County, Florida, in 1982, the Chaires-Capitola Volunteer Fire Department serves the communities of Chaires and Capitola, as well as 76 square miles (200 km2) of unincorporated Leon County, east of Tallahassee. This includes about 8,300 homes and approximately 19,000 residents.

The fire department has two stations, one in the immediate vicinity of Chaires Elementary School and the Dorothy Cooper Spence Community Center on Chaires Cross Road. This station (#12) is shared with the Tallahassee Fire Department and Leon County Emergency Medical Service, who each provide 24 hour coverage to the area from this location. The second Chaires-Capitola VFD station (#30) is located near the intersection of Williams Road and Louvinia Drive.

In May 2011, the Chaires-Capitola VFD boasted an active membership of 21 volunteers. The fire department owns six items of wheeled apparatus: one fire engine, one tanker truck, two brush trucks, an air/power/light trailer and two light rescue vehicles. Sixty-five percent of the department's calls are medical assistance, and include vehicle rescues. With nine miles (14 km) of Interstate Highway 10, eleven miles (18 km) of US Highway 90, and eight miles (13 km) of US Highway 27, many vehicle accidents are severe due to high speeds. As such, the department maintains state-of-the-art rescue tools.

In February 2008, the Chaires-Capitola VFD took delivery of a new air/power/light trailer, becoming the first VFD in Leon County to have this level of equipment available to support fire operations.
