Stephen Benn

The Hon Dr Stephen Benn (born 1951) is the Heir Apparent to the Viscountcy of Stansgate.

He is the eldest child and son of the politician Tony Benn and the late educationalist Caroline Benn. He is married to prominent Labour figure Nita Clarke (née Bowes). His wife was educated at Beckenham Grammar School for girls, now Langley Park, a successful Foundation School. She was House Captain of Burrell House and a resourceful innovator and leader before she left school to attend LSE in 1970. They have a daughter Emily, and a son Daniel.

Although less prominent politically than his brother, the Environment Secretary (from June 2007) Hilary Benn, Stephen Benn was one of the two elected representatives for Hackney North and Stoke Newington on the Inner London Education Authority (ILEA), serving from 1986 (after the abolition of the Greater London Council by the Conservative Government) until its demise in 1990. He is currently chief of political affairs and government relations at the world's oldest and Europe's largest chemical society, the Royal Society of Chemistry.

In September 2007, shortly before her 18th birthday, Benn's daughter Emily was selected to contest East Worthing and Shoreham for the Labour party in the next general election.. [ [http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7011922.stm Benn's granddaughter runs for MP] , BBC News, 25 September 2007.]
