XHDTV-TV, commonly identified on the air as "XDTV", is the My Network TV-affiliated television station, licensed to Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. However, the station's studios and offices are located across the border in San Diego, California, United States. The station is operated by Entravision Communications Corporation. XHDTV is referred to as "MyTV 13", as it is located on channel 13 on all San Diego area cable systems, although it is broadcast on channel 49 over the air and on satellite. The station does not carry any news and mostly carries cartoons, off network sitcoms, movies, talk shows and first run programming.

Because XHDTV is co-licensed to and broadcasting from Mexico, it is not covered under the must-carry Federal Communications Commission regulation. This means that XHDTV is the only full-power analog MyNetworkTV affiliate that local cable providers are not required to carry even if the station requests to be carried under this provision.

History

XHDTV-TV went on the air on November 1, 1999 as XHUPN-TV (or "XUPN"), taking over the UPN programming that was removed from previous area affiliate, KUSI-TV (Channel 51). In the interim, UPN programming was provided to San Diego via cable by Los Angeles' KCOP-TV. When XHUPN went on the air, KCOP asked the San Diego area cable providers to drop it from their lineups, and XHUPN adopted the "UPN 13" moniker.

When the merger of UPN and The WB was announced and with Tribune-owned KSWB 5/69 becoming a charter affiliate of The CW Television Network, XHUPN was expected to become an affiliate of Spanish-language network Telefutura, but on March 22, 2006, it was announced in Broadcasting & Cable Magazine that XHUPN would instead be a new affiliate of My Network TV. The station's UPN 13 logo had been dropped and the station simply called itself "Channel 13"; then later, "TV 13". This same practice of dropping UPN brandings from logos had become common on stations owned by News Corporation, due to the pending demise of UPN. Not long after XHUPN received the MyNetworkTV affiliation, it changed its calls to the present XHDTV. UPN programming on XHDTV ended on September 4, with the exception of WWE Friday Night SmackDown, which aired on late Friday/early Saturday after midnight, for the two weeks prior to the launch of The CW.

WWE Friday Night SmackDown returns to XHDTV on October 3, 2008, when that series moves to MyNetworkTV.
