Tadeusz Kościuszko Land Forces Military Academy" inWrocław . He served in a reconnaissance unit inDziwnów , then in the "1st Special Commando Regiment " inLubliniec , as commander of commando groups. From1992 until1994 he took part in theUNPROFOR peace mission in formerYugoslavia .In
1994 Polko began to study at the "Academy of National Defence " inWarsaw , after that he served in the position of a Senior Operation Officer in the "Czerwone Berety " (Red Berets) inKraków . He also finished a Ranger and Pathfinder Course in USA.In
1998 Polko became popular commander of the "6th Landing-Assault Battalion" fromBielsko-Biała , which was a part of the Polish military contingent in theNATO KFOR forces inKosovo .From
May 26 ,2000 untilFebruary 11 ,2004 he was commander of the special forces unit "GROM ". He commanded the GROM unit behind enemy lines inIraq , during theOperation Iraqi Freedom .In2006 colonel Polko returned to active duty, onFebruary 23 again became commander of GROM. Since March2006 Brigadier General (generał brygady ). OnSeptember 7 2006 Gen. Polko was nominated for the post of deputy chief of Biuro Bezpieczeństwa Narodowego (Bureau of National Security). In August 2007 he became acting chief of BBN, because previous chief was nominated for the post of minister of internal affairs. OnAugust 15 2007 R. Polko was promoted toMajor General (generał dywizji ).
