Bekasi is a growing city in Indonesia, located in the east of Jakarta in the Jabotabek region. As a city (city) , Bekasi is located in the West Java province. The city has a population of about 2 million within the city limits, while additional, substantial urban areas surround the city. It serves as a commuter city for Jakarta, although it has its own industries, notably trade, business and processing industries which are mostly located at the area of Karawang.

Administration

Bekasi is divided into 12 subdistricts: West Bekasi, East Bekasi, South Bekasi, North Bekasi, Medan Satria, Rawalumbu, Bantar Gebang, Pondok Gede, Jatisampurna, Jatiasih, Pondok Melati and Mustika Jaya.

Being a "middle city" ("kotamadia"), Bekasi is a regency of West Java. The capital is Cikarang, 20 kilometers east of Bekasi city.

Commerce

In recent years, due to the fact that Bekasi is located near Jakarta, many satellite cities have developed, such as Harapan Indah, Kemang Pratama, Taman Galaxy, and Grand Wisata within Tambun exit tol high way.

There are several shopping centers in Bekasi: Mega Bekasi Hypermall, the biggest one (anchor tenant: Giant), Grand Mall (anchor tenant: Hypermart), Blue Oasis City (anchor tenant: Carrefour), Metropolitan Mall (anchor tenant: Matahari), Bekasi Trade Centre, Bekasi Cyber Park, and the new Bekasi Square.

Traffic

Because of its strategic location as the satellite city of Jakarta, heavy traffic jams in the morning and evening hours have become common on the roads connecting Jakarta and Bekasi. Efforts have been made to overcome these problems, mainly by widening the roads of Pondok Gede and along the Kalimalang river. The most recent traffic project is the planning of Bekasi Timur-Cawang-Kampung Melayu (known as : Becakayu) tollroad. Becakayu tollroad could be alternate highway beside Cawang-Cikampek Tollroad. Jakarta Mass Rapid Transportation, which includes subways, monorails, busways and waterways systems that are supposed to connect Jakarta to the surrounding cities including Bekasi in future.
