"The Strawberry Pickers"

This became a generic term for the Romanians working outside their country, in the geographical space belonging to the European Union. The biggest communities may be found in Spain and in Italy.

In 2007, the Spanish authorities reported a number of 527,000 Romanians as legal residents in Spain. The Romanians working abroad are making an important impact on Romania's budget. In 2007, seven billion euros were transferred to Romania from abroad, by the workers who wanted to support their families at home. The Romanian current account deficit in 2007 increased by 66% from 2006, reaching 16.9 billion euro, and the money transferred from abroad played an important role in balancing this disequilibrium.
