The Captive Animals' Protection Society is a Manchester-based registered charity which aims to end the use of animals in the entertainment industry, including animals in circuses, zoos, the exotic pet trade and the audio-visual industry. It was formed in 1957 by Irene Heaton. CAPS commissioned the largest and most in-depth investigation ever made into the public aquaria industry. The report, published in September 2004, is believed to be the only study of its kind.
Three of the charity's directors have been given awards for their work by the RSPCA.
The charity's patrons are: Professor Marc Bekoff (prof of ecology and evolutionary biology), Mike Hancock CBE MP (Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament), Britta Jaschinski (world-renown photographer), Jay Kay (Grammy Ward-winning lead singer of Jamiroquai), Prof Randy Malamud (prof of English, Georgia State University),Dr Edgar Mann (ex-GP and member of the ancient Isle of Man Parliament), Fiona Oakes (elite marathon runner), Brian Sewell (art critic and columnist), Angela E. Smith MP (Labour Member of Parliament and Parliamentary Private Secretary to Rt Hon Gordon Brown, Prime Minister) and Peter Tatchell (Human Rights campaigner and Green Party Parliamentary candidate for Oxford East)
CAPS became a registered charity with the UK Charity Commission on 10th June 2008 (No.1124436)
