- Theocracy (computer game)
Theocracy is a
real-time strategy game for the PC developed byPhilos Laboratories and published byUbisoft in2000 . The game takes place inMexico andCentral America in the1400s . The player controls a tribe in this region, and has 100 years to prepare for a Spanish invasion by expanding their territory across the Central American map, by conquest, or by allying and trading with other tribes.Story
In Theocracy, you are the leader of the Atlan tribe (a fictional tribe), who has escaped from oppression under the Axocopan Tribe, and now must improve your tribe in order to survive in Central America. As you expand your empire's borders, you are able to conduct diplomacy with other tribes nearby. Some are openly hostile and immediately and unconditionally at war against you (such as the Yaxuna tribe) and some are neutral to you and wait for you to decide your relations.
An oracle has predicted the coming of the Feathered Snake, an Aztec god (the Spanish invasion force). However, before he could predict how long before they arrived, he was struck by lightning and burned to the bone.
Gameplay
There are two modes of playing: province view, and realm view. In province view, you view a particular province under your control/attack. Here you assign tasks to your persons, however time stands still here, and you must go to realm view for time to move and your actions to take effect. There is a time-scale in realm view, along with a hand-drawn map of Central America, showing all the province borders, and using colour-code to show which of the eight factions controls it. Your tribe is blue, other tribes are red, yellow, green, purple and cobalt, provinces under control from a random tribe with no possible relations to others are paper-coloured, and provinces controlled by the Spanish (once the Spanish arrive to invade) are grey. You can also build Aztec style pyramids to harness the power of Magic from the 5 spheres of Magic. Each specialses in its own magic style: The sun sphere priests are masters of attack spells, moon priests in defence, nature priests in healing, soul priests in attack and betrayal and star priests in poison
The time scale can be used to determine how fast time passes. It can be paused to make time stand still, and at slowest rate, a year passes in approximately 10 or so minutes, and at fastest rate, a year passes in approximately 20 seconds.
