Newport Students' Union is the official title of the student body of students at the
University of Wales, Newport . All new students are automatically accepted into the Students' Union but can, under theEducation Act 1994 , opt-out of the Union.The Students' Union itself is run by four Sabbatical Officers elected annually for run for a 12-month term. They are organised as such:
President
The President is the public face of the Union and the first point of contact for the media and university body. He/she sits on the Board of Governors and Management Board for the University and manages the Union in all senses. Tom Bond, current President, is obsessed with the idea of reforming the Students Union hence the catchphrase 'Tom Bond show me your constitution'.
Athletic Union Officer
The 'AU' Officer organises all the various sports team within the Athletic Union. They are responsible for getting teams sponsorship, kit, transportation, accommodation and organising the annual Sports Ball and initiation ceremonies. The AU officer also takes care of all the Union's societies - Christian Union, LGBT etc.
Education & Welfare Officer
The EWO is responsible for ensuring all students are treated fairly and feel settled in their time at Newport. Their most important role is liasing with lecturers when students feel they cannot. He/she sits on the Students' Council.
Entertainments & Media Officer
The 'Ents' officer is responsible for organising all Student Union trips, parties, events and entertainment, as well as, from 2008/09 academic year, ultimate responsibility of NTV (Newport Television), Radio Noize and the SU newspaper.
