The town has a population of 15,636 ( [http://www.gobiernodecanarias.org/istac/ ISTAC] , 2003), a density of 242 inhabitants per square kilometre and an area of 61.41 km². It is located southeast of the main highway linking Arrecife (the island capital) and Yaiza.

The main industry, by far, is tourism. Lanzarote's largest tourist resort, Puerto del Carmen, is entirely in the borough of Tías, and was the location of the first hotels ever built on the island.

Tías has a Primary Education school, a Further Education school, an indoor sports centre, a "terrero" (Canarian wrestling ring), three churches, a post office, a library, a small auditorium, a petrol station, various bakeries and a number of supermarkets, restaurants and bars.
