Effective number of parties

Effective number of parties

The idea behind the effective number of electoral parties is to provide for an adjusted number of parties in an electoral system. We may do this to account only for the number of effective parties, in other words parties that can actually make a difference in an electoral democracy. This measure is especially useful when comparing electoral systems across countries, like it is done in the field of political science.

The effective number of electoral parties is calculated by squaring each political party’s share of the vote and then adding all the values together and calculating the inverse value [http://www-personal.umich.edu/~wpark/papers/ENP-Ver01.pdf] .

:Party # 1 vote share = 0.50:Party # 2 vote share = 0.50

Therefore,:(0.5)^2 + (0.5)^2 = 0.5

Thus,:1/0.5= 2 effective parties.
