** 17 March - Most of the states of the Italian peninsula are united under king Victor Emmanuel II of the Savoy dynasty.
* 1870
** 20 September - Rome, previously under Papal control, is united to Italy.
** 2 October - Rome replaces Florence as the capital city of Italy.

* 27 October29 October - The March on Rome: Benito Mussolini's National Fascist Party seizes power.
* 1923
** June - The Italian Parliament passes the Acerbo Law allowing Mussolini control of the electoral system.
** August - Corfu incident: a diplomatic incident occurs between Greece and Italy.
* 1935
** October - beginning of the Second Italo-Abyssinian War.
* 1939
** 7 April - Italian invasion of Albania.
** 22 May - Mussolini signs the Pact of Steel with Nazi Germany.
* 1940
** 10 June - World War II: Mussolini declares war on France and the United Kingdom.

** Italian Campaign: Allied forces launch an invasion of Italy.
* 1943
** 25 July - Mussolini dismissed as Prime Minister by Victor Emmanuel III following a vote of no confidence.
** 3 September - Marshal Pietro Badoglio signs an armistice with the Allies.

** 2 June - Birth of the Italian Republic: Italy becomes a republic after the results of a popular referendum.
* 1963
** 30 June - Ciaculli massacre: a bomb intended for the mafia boss Salvatore Greco "Ciaschiteddu" explodes in Ciaculli killing seven police and military officers.
** 9 October - 3000 people die when a landslide at the Vajont Dam north of Venice causes a megatsunami.
* 1969
** 12 December - Piazza Fontana bombing: far-right terrorists bomb the Banca Nazionale dell'Agricoltura in Milan.
* 1978
** 16 March - Kidnapping of the former Prime Minister Aldo Moro by the Red Brigades.
** 9 May - Moro killed after the government refuses to negotiate with the Communist group.
* 1994
** 27 April - Media magnate Silvio Berlusconi becomes Prime Minister.
* 1996
** 17 May - Romano Prodi becomes Prime Minister.

** 11 June - Berlusconi's second term as Prime Minister begins.

** 17 May - Prodi's second term as Prime Minister begins.
