Mr. Joseph Khoury (born on
November 1st ,1936 is theCatholic Bishop of theEpachry of Saint Maron of Montreal Maronites .He was ordained as a
priest onDecember 19 1964 after studying at the Jesuits of Saint Maron ofGhazier as well as theUniversity of Rome and theGregorian University . He became a specialist in the history of contemporary atheism and subsequently earned a doctorate in canon andcivil law at thePontifical Lateran University .He worked at the
Roman Rota from 1969 until 1972, and represented theHoly See in theMiddle East for the Congregation of the Oriental Churches from1969 to1993 . He is a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship from 1975 to 1995, and of the inter-religious dialogue since 1976. He taught at the Institute Regina Mundi for twenty years until1996 .He has also published books about
Islamic philosophy and canon law.On
April 29 , 1993, he was appointed auxiliary bishop of the now vacant seat of Chonochora, then wasconsecrated as Bishop on September 4th of that year byCardinal Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir and the bishops Roland Aboujaoudé and Gabriel Toblé. On November 11, 1996,Pope John Paul II appointed him as bishop of the Epachry of Saint Maron of Montreal Maronites.On the Assembly of Quebec Bishops, Bishop Khoury sits on the committee of inter-cultural relations and the commission of Canon Law.
On
February 28 ,2005 Bishop Khoury singed an open letter with localSunni ,Shiite andDruze religious leaders objecting to the amendment in the definition of marriage by then Canadian Prime MinisterPaul Martin . In October the same year, he organized anIftar with the local Islamic community ofMontreal .External links
