] Locally referred to as simply The Square, this originated as the crossroads for a pair of native American trails. From this location, the city was founded and expanded away from through the present. Tryon Street runs north-south, and Trade Street runs east-west.

Notable structures and events

* In 1768, erected the first home in what is present day Charlotte.
* Location of the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence in May 1775.
* General Nathanael Greene assumed command of the patriot army from Horatio Gates on December 3, 1780.
* Confederate president Jefferson Davis and his cabinet visited on their flight southward after the fall of Richmond in April 1865.
* The Bank of America Corporate Center, a 60-story building housing the executives of the bank and service sector tenants, is located here.
