He taught Sanskrit in Vidarbha and Marathwada and made a modest name for himself as a fine orator in 1970s. In 1980s, his popularity skyrocketed, partly due to the programs he presented with Hridaynath Mangeshkar where Shewalkar's narration would punctuate the music.
