Ram Shewalkar

Ram Shewalkar

Ram Shewalkar is a famous orator and Marathi writer from Nagpur. He was born to a kirtankar. He taught Sanskrit in Vidarbha and Marathwada and made a modest name for himself as a fine orator in 1970s. In 1980s, his popularity skyrocketed, partly due to the programs he presented with Hridaynath Mangeshkar where Shewalkar's narration would punctuate the music.

Ram Shewalkar is also titular head of Shewalkar Constructions, a company run by his engineer son Ashutosh. Over last few years he has cut down his assignments because of advancing age and health problems but remains a much sought after figure to deliver keynote speeches on cultural occasions. He specializes in mythology (Ramayana and Mahabharata), poet saints of Maharashtra (Dnyaneshwar, Tukaram, Samarth Ramdas, and more modern cultural icons like Savarkar and Vinoba Bhave.

His fame as orator dwarfs his writing which is more modest in merit. But he has been president of Marathi Sahitya Sammelan.
