Lieutenant General James J. Lovelace is a native of Richmond, Virginia. He was commissioned a second lieutenant in Field Artillery upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1970.

Education

His military education includes the Field Artillery Basic and Advanced courses, the Armor Advanced Course, the Armed Forces Staff College, the Command and General Staff College, and the Naval War College. He holds a master's degree in Physical Education from Indiana University, a master's degree in Management from Salve Regina College, and a master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College.

Career

Lieutenant General Lovelace has served in a variety of command and staff positions. He commanded batteries in the 2d Infantry Division and XVIII Airborne Corps Artillery. He has served as Battalion S-3 for the 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Director of Instruction in the Department of Physical Education at the United States Military Academy; Aide-de-camp to the Commanding General of First United States Army, Fort Meade, Maryland; Assistant Fire Support Coordinator for the 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Commander of the 5th Battalion, 8th Field Artillery, 18th Field Artillery Brigade, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Deputy J-5 for Plans and Programs, Alaskan Command, Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska; Chief of Staff for the Joint Task Force, Exercise Cobra Gold '92; Commander of the 6th Infantry Division (Light) Artillery, Fort Richardson, Alaska; Chief of the Commanding General's Initiative Group, United States Forces Korea, Yongsan, Korea; Chief of Staff of the 2d Infantry Division, Camp Red Cloud, Korea; Assistant Division Commander for Support of the 2d Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea; Commanding General, Joint Task Force 6, Fort Bliss, Texas; Director of Training, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, The Pentagon; Commanding General, U.S. Army Alaska; Director of the Army Staff, U.S. Army, Washington, D.C.; and Deputy Chief of Staff, G-3/5/7, U.S. Army, Washington, DC.

He assumed command of U.S. Army Central and Coalition Forces Land Component Command on December 18th, 2007.
