Teaching

Masters recommends using a metronome:

  • "I have found the heavy use of a metronome very helpful."[4]
  • "What I would propose is that rubato be the last interpretive tool you add to a piece.[...]
get your score and a pencil [...] marking in where you think there should be rubato. [...]
Finally listen back to your recording with a metronome in hand. Passages where you have no rubato marked, you should remain fairly true to the metronome. [...]
If you realize that you have a problem with this[...] Use a metronome."[4]
