refnum=71000742Woodlands, or the William Gilmore Simms Estate, was the home of author
William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870). It is known also as Woodlands Ruins. According to the South Carolina Department of Archives and History, it is a "significant literary landmark". Simms, who married into the family that owned it and then was given this estate, observed “I am moving into an ancient dwelling largely fallen into disrepair". And further, it was burned by Federal army stragglers in 1865. But Simms did repair and use buildings and it was a gathering place for literary visitors.cite web|url=http://www.nationalregister.sc.gov/bamberg/S10817705010/index.htm
