Aviara, Carlsbad, California

Aviara is a resort neighborhood and census designated place in the southern part of Carlsbad, located in San Diego County, California. The community is approximately 20 minutes from the city of San Diego. As of the 2005 census, it had a total population of 5,050. In 1989 the community was developed and later incorporated into nearby Carlsbad.

The community of Aviara is a resort community in the hills of South Carlsbad, overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Batiquitos Lagoon. Aviara is just north of Encinitas and west of La Costa. The community is mostly residential except for the Four Seasons Hotel and Aviara golf and country club. In the annual Forbes Magazine ranking of "Most Expensive Zip Codes" in the U.S. Aviara's 92011 zip code ranked among some of the most expensive in the nation. The community is largely characterized by miles of tree-lined streets and a handful of gated communities. Select properties command views of the ocean, Batiquitos lagoon, and Aviara golf course that sweeps through the community. Homes in Aviara, range from modest single family homes to large mediterranean villas.

To preserve quality of life, the community council has numerous stringent ordinances, including laws against dead lawns, architectural styles, permanent basketball hoops and courts, satellite dishes and exterior paint colors. It is also a violation to leave trashcans on the street or in public view. Residents who wish to improve, add-on, or make further construction changes to their homes must undergo a strict and lengthy process that includes a community hearing, submitted proposal, and consent among all neighbors. The plans must be approved by the community in order for construction to begin. At times, residents can be denied construction rights by the city if their plan does not satisfy architectural or landscaping requirements.

The community received some media attention in 2004 when a resident was arrested for defrauding an estimated $191 million dollars from elderly people across the United States. Larre Jaye Schlarmann and three others were each ordered held on $144 million bail. Aviara is located at 30°3'20" North, 117°17'49" West (33.121990, -117.296811).According to the United States Census Bureau, the district has a total area of 1.6 miles².

Education

Younger children attend Aviara Oaks Elementary and Middle Schools while Carlsbad High School and La Costa Canyon High School serve the older students. Fine private schools including the prestigious The Bishop's School, La Jolla Country Day School, Pacific Ridge School, Horizon Prep, St. Patrick's School, and Army & Navy Academy are conveniently located close by.
