The Chattanooga Steam is Chattanooga, Tennessee's one and only men's semi-pro american football team. The Steam were founded in 2002. The Steam play in the Deep South Football League (March through May) or DSFL [1] and the Gridiron Developmental Football League or GDFL[2] (June through September). The Steam were formerly members of the United South Football League or USFL [3] The Steam currently play their home games at Lookout Valley High School in southern Chattanooga.[4]
Team history
The name "Chattanooga Steam" was made because the original owners of the ball club wanted their team to be Chattanooga's team. Due to the railroad history of the city, they felt that a train should be incorporated, and simply moved the "S" from "Chattanooga's" and added it to "team". The result was the Chattanooga Steam.
The Steam have been ranked by the Minor League Football News Top 25 in 2008. On April 6, 2008, they received their highest ranking at #11 in the United States.[5] Again, on May 31, 2009, the Steam were ranked #11 in the United States.[6]
In 2008, the Steam played an independent schedule and finished the year with a record of 16-5.
During the 2009 DSFL season, the Steam finished 10-0 in the regular season. On June 13, 2009, the Steam defeated the Georgia Buccaneers 22-8 to win the DSFL championship game in Atlanta, Georgia.[1][7] Coach Kenneth "Skip" Poole was also named DSFL Coach of the Year following the trophy ceremony.[8] This was the first championship won by a Chattanooga team since semi-pro football came to Chattanooga in the 1950s.[8]
In 2010, Coach Kenneth "Skip" Poole went to Poland to coach the team's European affiliate, the Devils Wrocław. Interim Head Coach Alan "Moon" Lowrance led the team to a record of 10-1 in the DSFL. The Steam lost in the DSFL championship game to the Gainesville Gladiators 23-14. The team opted not to participate in the USFL that season.
Coach Poole will return to the Steam for the 2011 season.
Players age range from 18 to mid 40s.
