Liechtenstein Football Cup

The Liechtenstein Football Cup has been organised annually by the Liechtenstein Football Association (LFV) since 1946. The winner qualifies to take part in the UEFA Cup.

As there is no national league in Liechtenstein and the teams play their league football in the Swiss leagues, the cup is effectively the Liechtenstein Championship. This is the only route to European football competition for Liechtenstein teams, as they cannot qualify through the Swiss league system. Competition Format

The competition has an unusual format in that not only can the first teams of the main 7 football clubs enter, but also the reserve sides, which all play in lower divisions in the Swiss league system.

For instance, in the 2006-07 cup, FC Vaduz entered their first team, along with their second team FC Vaduz II and third team FC Vaduz III. FC Triesen entered along with a reserve side, originally made up of Spanish players (known as FC Triesen Español). FC Schaan entered their first team, and a reserve side, historically made up of Italian players (known as FC Schaan Azzurri).

This can lead to some unusual scenarios, such as in the second round of the 2006-07 cup, where FC Triesenberg's second team went through, but the first team was knocked out.
