Palestinian-American poet and physician, is the 2007 winner of theYale Series of Younger Poets Competition for his collection of poems "The Earth in the Attic", which was published byYale University Press in April 2008Joudah was born in
Austin, Texas in 1971 toPalestinian refugee parents, and grew up inLibya andSaudi Arabia . He returned to theUnited States to study to become a doctor, first attending theUniversity of Georgia inAthens , and then theMedical College of Georgia , before completing his medical training at theUniversity of Texas . Joudah currently practices as an ER physician inHouston, Texas . He has also volunteered abroad with the humanitarian organizationDoctors Without Borders .Joudah's poetry has been published in a variety of publications, including
Poetry magazine ,Iowa Review ,Kenyon Review , Drunken Boat,Prairie Schooner andCrab Orchard . In 2006, he published "The Butterflies Burden", a collection of recent poems byPalestinian poetMahmoud Darwish translated fromArabic . He was a finalist for the 2008PEN Award for Poetry in Translation for his translation ofMahmoud Darwish 's "The Butterfly's Burden".References
