Ronald Allen Smith

Ronald Allen Smith is a Canadian man who was sentenced to death in the United States for killing two people.

Smith, who is from Red Deer, Alta., was sentenced to death in March 1983. Seven months earlier, he killed two aboriginal men who offered him a ride while hitchhiking.

He marched cousins Harvey Mad Man, 23, and Thomas Running Rabbit, 20, into the woods by the highway and shot them both in the head with a sawed-off .22-calibre rifle. [http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2007/11/01/death-penalty.html]

Canada chose not to seek clemency in his case and allowed him to be receive the death penalty.

This case set a precedent which makes it difficult for the Canadian government to stop Saudi Arabia from executing a Canadian man, Mohamed Kohail, 23, who is accused of murder in Saudi Arabia. As of March, 2008, the Saudi government announced plans to publicly execute him by beheading him.
