Forest based sector Technology Platform

The Forest-Based Sector Technology Platform (FTP in brief) is a European Technology Platform initiative to improve the competitiveness of the European-forest based sector. The Technology Platform was created in 2004 by the "European Confederation of Woodworking Industries" (CEI-Bois), the "Confederation of European Forest Owners" (CEPF) and the "Confederation of European Paper Industries" (CEPI).

The FTP, which is endorsed by the European Commission, aims to promote research and innovation in the sector. The platform is industry-driven, but partnership is stressed, across national borders and between industry, the research sector and other stakeholders.

A culture of sharing knowledge and joint innovation is to be developed based on the following Vision 2030:"The European forest-based sector plays a key role in a sustainable society. It comprises a competitive, knowledge-based industry that fosters the extended use of renewable resources. It strives to ensure its societal contribution in the context of a bio-based, customer-driven and globally competitive European economy."

The main objective of the FTP is to implement its Strategic Research Agenda (SRA), which lists five strategic objectives:1. Development of innovative products for changing markets and customer needs.2. Development of intelligent and efficient manufacturing processes, including reduced energy consumption.3. Enhancing availability and use of forest biomass for products and energy.4. Meeting the multifunctional demands on forest resources and their sustainable management.5. The sector in a societal perspective.

These have been specified into 26 research areas the forest-based value chains Forestry, Wood Products, Pulp & Paper Products, Bio-energy, and New businesses / Specialities. National Research Agendas adapt the SRA to national conditions.

The FTP presently comprises a network of 24 National Support Groups, which bring together the forest-based sector at the national level and take active part in the platform’s international activities. The latter include regular meetings, events, and a close dialogue with institutions such as the European Commission. Collaboration with other sectors is another key priority.
