T.O.C.

T.O.C. Teacher on Call is the accepted term for a substitute teacher in British Columbia, Canada. In British Columbia T.O.C.'s are employees of local school boards and are all fully qualified members of the B.C. Collegeof Teachers. As such all T.O.C.'s are fully qualified teachers and have received at least a bachelor of education. T.O.C.'s are hired by local school districts and are generally contacted by either teachers or schools to temporarily fulfill the duties of the classroom teacher.

Benefits

The standard daily wage for a T.O.C. in British Columbia is $190.The Average Annual income of a T.O.C. is approximately $12000. This adds up to an average of 66 full time work days. The annual earnings vary considerably between districts and individual teachers. For example many T.O.C.'s are retired teachers that are only interested in part time work. For T.O.C.'s actively searching for work the annual average income is approximately $13600.T.O.C.'s do not enjoy the same benefits as contracted teachers such as medical and dental coverage. Demographics

The average age of T.O.C.'s in B.C. is 40. The single largest age group of T.O.C.'s is mid to late 20's. The bulk of this age group is currently seeking a full time contract, while many older T.O.C.'s are not. Many T.O.C.'s not looking for full contracts are parents of young children not wanting full time work. Many others are retired teachers who still enjoy teaching part time. Advantages and Drawbacks

A 2005 BCTF survey of T.O.C.'s listed several commonly perceived advantages and drawbacks to the job.

ADVANTAGES.• Ability to observe many classroom, school environments.• Practice with different teaching strategies, ages resources. As a learning process for future career.• Flexibility in schedule.• Eventual fulltime position in district.

DRAWBACKS.• Stress about the amount of work that needs to be accomplished.• Stress about, the unknown of the day.• Lack of Benefits• Call out fairness • Lack of status recognition by students and staff.
